To become a NARI Certified Lead Carpenter, applicants must have been actively involved in the industry for a minimum of five years, with at least two years in a lead carpenter position; they must complete a Qualification Matrix detailing their background, related job experience, and skills; they must provide letters of recommendation concerning their experience, competency, and commitment to quality work and ethical business practices. In addition all applicants become involved in an intensive Study Group program hosted by Tri-County NARI in preparation for the exam. Participants of the CLC study group meet in three hour weekly sessions that run for eight weeks.
Applicants must then sit for a full day written exam. Candidates' exam scores, Qualification Matrixes, and letters of recommendation are then evaluated by the NARI Certification Board, which decides upon approval or disapproval of each candidate.
Each CLC is required to recertify on an annual basis, fulfilling NARI's recertification educational requirements. This process ensures that all CLCs stay abreast of industry trends and continue to follow sound project management practices.
